United Arab Emirates — Winter in the UAE marks the peak of camping season, with cooler temperatures and occasional rains drawing residents and tourists to deserts, mountains, and nature reserves. However, authorities are reminding campers that enjoying the outdoors comes with responsibilities—and violations can result in hefty fines.

Here are key guidelines every camper should know:

Stick to Designated Camping Areas

Camping outside approved locations is prohibited. Municipalities in Sharjah, Fujairah, and other emirates may impose fines of up to Dh2,000 for unauthorized camping or leaving litter behind. Designated sites help ensure safety and environmental protection.

Handle Waste Responsibly

Dumping, burning, or burying waste outside approved areas is illegal under Federal Law No. 12 of 2018 on Integrated Waste Management. Individuals face fines of up to Dh30,000, while businesses may be fined up to Dh1 million. Campers are advised to pack out all waste and leave no trace.

Respect Wildlife and Nature

Damaging natural reserves, cutting trees, or disturbing wildlife is strictly prohibited under Federal Law No. 24 of 1999. Penalties range from Dh10,000 fines to six months’ imprisonment, depending on the offense and species affected.

Monitor Weather Conditions

Winter rains can trigger flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas. The National Center of Meteorology and civil defence authorities urge campers to check weather updates regularly and avoid flood-prone zones. Open flames and electrical equipment should not be used during storms.

Know the Public Safety Rules

Under Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024, entering valleys or flood areas during rainfall can result in a Dh2,000 fine, 23 traffic points, and 60-day vehicle impoundment. Standing near dams, flood channels, or valley edges during storms carries Dh1,000 fines and six traffic points.

Plan Ahead for a Safe Trip

Campers are encouraged to bring appropriate clothing, first-aid kits, and sufficient food and water. Fires and camping equipment must be used responsibly, fellow campers respected, and sites left clean.

Winter camping in the UAE offers breathtaking desert sunsets, cool nights, and scenic mountain views—but only when done responsibly. By following safety regulations and environmental laws, campers can enjoy nature while helping preserve it for future generations.
