UAE School Bus Stop Sign Penalty: Dh1,000 Fine and 10 Traffic Points

08 January 2026

Motorists in the UAE who ignore school bus stop signs face a Dh1,000 fine and 10 black points as authorities step up enforcement to protect student safety.

UAE authorities are enforcing strict penalties for motorists who fail to stop for school buses displaying their “STOP” sign arm, requiring drivers to come to a complete stop to ensure the safety of children boarding or disembarking. Under current traffic regulations, drivers who ignore the stop sign on two‑way roads must halt at least five metres from the bus in both directions to allow students to cross safely.

Motorists who do not comply with this rule are subject to a Dh1,000 fine and 10 black traffic points on their driver’s licence, which can affect driving privileges if accumulated. Traffic enforcement officers have also noted that automated systems and radar technology installed on some school buses can detect violations when the stop sign is extended, increasing enforcement accuracy.

The safety measure is part of a broader effort by police and transport authorities across the UAE to protect young passengers as the school term resumes. Drivers are urged to be extra vigilant around school buses, obey traffic laws, and maintain a safe distance when approaching a bus with an active stop sign.

In addition to the school bus stop rule, UAE traffic guidelines recommend slowing down in school zones, using child safety seats, and adhering to posted speed limits to further enhance road safety for children and all road users.
