The Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. reassured Filipino-Americans that it is closely tracking developments surrounding a U.S. bill proposing the elimination of dual citizenship.
In a statement, the Embassy emphasized that the measure remains only a proposal, noting that it must undergo extensive debate and deliberation in the U.S. Congress.
“It may or may not advance, and lawmakers will need to consider its potential impact on major immigrant communities,” the Embassy said.
Officials also urged Filipinos in the United States to stay informed and avoid renouncing their Philippine citizenship, reminding the community that such a decision is permanent.
If enacted, the bill would end dual citizenship entirely. Any U.S. citizen who voluntarily acquires another citizenship would be considered to have relinquished their U.S. citizenship under the proposed measure.
