Deadly Crans-Montana Fire Leads to National Mourning in Switzerland
A fire at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana leaves Switzerland in mourning as authorities work to identify victims and investigate the cause.
Switzerland is in mourning after a devastating fire broke out at Le Constellation bar in the Crans-Montana resort, one of the country’s most popular nightlife destinations. Authorities continue search, rescue, and identification efforts, and the exact number of casualties remains unknown.
Crans-Montana, internationally renowned for its ski slopes and golf courses, was plunged into grief as the festive venue turned into the site of one of Switzerland’s worst recent tragedies. The Swiss government has declared five days of national mourning.
Valais Canton police commander Frédéric Gisler said authorities are working to identify victims and notify families, calling the community “devastated” by the incident.
Italy’s ambassador to Switzerland, Gian Lorenzo Cornado, confirmed that 13 of the injured were Italian citizens, while six Italians are still missing.
Valais Canton Attorney General Beatrice Pilloud stated it is too early to determine the cause of the fire, noting that experts have not safely entered the wreckage. She clarified there is no indication of foul play, and emphasized that the investigation aims to clarify the circumstances, not to target any individual.
“At this stage, the number of people who were inside the bar is completely unknown,” Pilloud said, adding that the venue’s maximum capacity will be reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
No suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made as authorities continue their careful inquiry into the tragic event.
