A strong magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off Japan’s northeastern coast on Monday, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to issue an immediate tsunami warning.

Authorities warned that waves up to three meters high could impact coastal communities and urged residents in affected areas to evacuate to higher ground without delay.

Emergency response teams have been deployed and are currently assessing structural damage while closely monitoring sea-level changes. Disaster response protocols were activated across vulnerable coastal regions.

Officials said updates will be released as soon as verified information becomes available.
