A new and “exciting era” is emerging in relations between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and South Korea as both sides deepen strategic cooperation to promote regional peace and stability, Philippine Ambassador to ASEAN Elizabeth Buensuceso said during the ASEAN–Korea Forum on December 5.

Buensuceso noted that ASEAN and South Korea are entering a phase of expanded collaboration, particularly in areas such as the rule of law, maritime security, dialogue, and broader regional cooperation. She emphasized that these efforts align closely with the Philippines’ upcoming chairmanship of ASEAN.

She highlighted South Korea’s consistent support for ASEAN Centrality, pointing to the Korea–ASEAN Solidarity Initiative (KASI) as a key framework strengthening the partnership. According to Buensuceso, KASI complements ASEAN’s Indo-Pacific Outlook through cooperation in maritime affairs, sustainable development goals (SDGs), connectivity, and economic engagement.

South Korean Ambassador Lee Sang Hwa echoed these sentiments, underscoring the growing trust between ASEAN and South Korea. He noted that ASEAN has become South Korea’s third-largest trading partner and investment destination, as well as the top destination for Korean tourists.

Ambassador Lee added that South Korea continues to regard ASEAN as a central pillar of its foreign policy, reflecting the strategic importance of the partnership amid evolving regional and global dynamics.
