Alex Eala captures SEA Games women’s singles gold, ending a 26-year drought and reinforcing her status as Philippine tennis history-maker.
Alex Eala once again brought pride to the Philippines after standing atop the podium with a gold medal victory in women’s singles tennis at the 2025 Southeast Asian Games, marking a historic milestone for Philippine sports.
Eala delivered a dominant performance in the final, defeating Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew, 6–1, 6–2, to secure the title. The win marked the Philippines’ first SEA Games women’s tennis gold in 26 years.
She received her gold medal from Team Philippines Chef de Mission Dr. Jose Raul Canlas, with her parents, Mike and Rizza Eala, proudly by her side during the medal ceremony.
At just 20 years old, Eala has already built one of the most impressive resumes in Philippine sports. In 2025, she reached a career-high WTA Top 50 ranking, the highest ever achieved by a Filipino tennis player, and claimed her first professional WTA singles title at the Guadalajara 125 Open.
Her achievements also include becoming the first Filipino to win a main-draw match at a Grand Slam, along with strong performances at elite tournaments such as the Miami Open and the Eastbourne final.
Eala’s SEA Games gold further cements her role as a trailblazer for Philippine tennis, inspiring a new generation of Filipino athletes to compete and excel on the global stage.
